A Light Bulb Can Get You Girls AND Give You Facebook Alerts?

Lights are WILDLY underrated. When I was in college I threw a lot of parties. I would pack my tiny apartment FULL of coeds. Every week my parties would grow bigger and bigger. Eventually, things got out of hand. Too many stranger dangers came and then a few bad apples ruined it for everyone.

Plain White Walls Are a DRAG

What made my parties so awesome? You don’t need a McMansion. I had a tiny, pre-furnished, college apartment. It didn’t have anything to do with me as a person. Like I said, people I didn’t even know were showing up to my place.

What made my parties so awesome was all the sweet lighting I bought to liven up my place. I bought disco lights, strobe lights, colorful lamps, all sorts of stuff. It made my place look amazing and set the tone for my guests to have a good time.

Not Just Light Bulbs. Game Changers

Philips Hue LED smart bulbs could have actually replaced ALL the lighting at my old apartment and comes with incredible features no normal light bulb could perform. I’ll explain.

Think about this: white walls don’t really put you in a fun mood. They are kind of a drag. Picture your walls. Now imagine your house full of people. They stand there, like zombies, barely acknowledging each other. Now picture your walls with splashes of purples, reds, and pinks. Drinks in everyone’s hands and music playing in the background. Everybody is smiling now. And standing a little closer.

A Smart LED Light is…A Light Bulb With an Internet Connection?

The Philips Hue LED bulbs are no ordinary light bulbs. They’re smart wifi bulbs, and they replace the need for virtually any other type of lighting you could need for anything.

Philips Hue’s smart bulbs are capable of taking orders from your phone or voice, and displaying up to 16 million different colors and even 50,000 shades of white.

You can sync your Philips Hue light bulbs to react with music, movies, sporting events, and program them to do all sorts of different things. Your Hue lighting even works with your Amazon Echo and Alexa. It’s a total revolution for light bulb functionality.

Impressive Features, Simple Setup

If this is your first Hue set you should start with these guys: Philips 464495 Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 Starter Kit, 3rd Generation with Richer Colors.

The A19 Starter Kit comes with 3 color changing bulbs (16 million colors and 50,000 shades of white. Much wow.) and a bridge which connects them all to wifi so you can use your phone or voice to control and program them.

The latest generation (3rd) addresses customer concerns that the Yellow shades had too much of a green tint to them. Now the Philips Hue produces beautiful vibrant yellows, no problemo.

See What Others Are Saying

Setting up the Philips Hue A19 Starter Kit bulbs is easy as pie.

  1. The bulbs themselves don’t require any special treatment. They screw into a light socket just like any other light bulb. Next step is to set up the bridge.
  2. To set up the bridge: Plug in the power and connect the bridge to your internet with wifi or ethernet. Easy Peasy.
  3. Download the app and connect the bridge on your wifi network. You are all set to label and control your lighting with your phone!

Philips Hue Light Bulbs Are Uniquely Programmable.

Display Different Colors at Different Times

Wake up with a 30 minute fade. This feature can be great for a bunch of different applications. You can program your lights to turn on when you wake up.

If you’re like me, you’ll want them to just pop on and wake you the hell up. But there are other folks who prefer to use the Scenes and Fade feature to wake up to a soft sunrise type color.

The fade feature is really cool in that your lights will gradually become lighter over the time period you select, say 30 minutes. More on Scenes in a moment.

Sunrise Philips Hue Scenes Feature
Wake Up To This Sunrise Every Day (Basically) With a Philips Hue Light Bulb In Your Room

Set timed alerts and alarms. Apart from just waking up in the morning, I’ve seen parents who use the timer feature to keep their kids on schedule.

For instance, little Billy knows it’s homework time when the lamp light turns orange. When the purple light switches on, it’s time for him to turn off the Xbox and come down for dinner.

Take Pictures, Create Scenes, Control ambiance

The Scenes feature gives you spectacular ability to control ambiance in a room.

Create Regular Scenes (Save Your Settings). Very simple here. Set your light bulbs to the color and brightness you like. Then name that setting and save it. You can have different lighting for “Reading,” “Dinner,” “Watching TV,” etc. In this regard, the Scene feature is basically a Philips word for “save a preset.” Still very nifty. But the next part is cooler.

Use Photos to Create Scenes. When I saw this it just blew my mind. With this feature you can take any photo in your phone, or some Philips preset photos, and paint your room with those colors. Some people claim this feature has helped them with their mental health and helps set a relaxing atmosphere and create ambiance.

Creating Scenes is SUPER Easy. Go to scenes in your Hue app, select new scene, then select choose photo. This will allow you to choose from your own gallery or Philips preset gallery. There are actually some pretty sweet default images to use. Anyways, pick whatever photo or memory that melts your heart or makes you happy. Hue will color the room the colors of your selection.

Get “Lamp” Notifications with IFTTT

Notifications and IFTTT. Smart devices are getting smarter every day and working with more and more devices and apps. With IFTTT (If This Than That) you can use applets that trigger your smart devices when certain actions occur.

Say your phone is out of sight, maybe on a charger in your bedroom, turn on your IFTTT notifications recipe for your lamp to blink blue if you get a Facebook notification, text message, or email.

I’ve seen videos of people programming their lights to notify them of current weather (pink means snow, blue means rain, green means high pollen, etc.). I haven’t really looked into this personally, HOWEVER, it just shows even more unique applications for a smart wifi light bulb.

You can check out a bunch of awesome Philips Hue applets on IFTTT.

Many Lights in One

The Hue bulbs in the A19 starter kit can be white, colorful, change in rhythm with music, strobe, and so much more.

If I had Hue LED light bulbs in my college days, these guy’s features would have been pushed to the max. I would have had them synced and switching with the music, going like normal. Then pulled out my app (if I had a smart phone when I was in college – dating myself, right?), and snapped them into a wild strobe for a song, and then back to something less intense to keep the roof on the ceiling.

Classic Light Features

Automatic Timers. No need for crazy colors or wacky recipes here. The automatic light timer has been around for ages. If you leave your house for vacation but want to keep the appearance that someone is home, program your lights to stay on during certain hours of the day.

Dimmer. You have the control to dim your Hue lights with voice (if you have Alexa) or your phone app.

On and Off. Just like a real light bulb.

Works With Nest, Alexa, Google Home, Siri, and More

Tell Alexa, Siri, and Google Home to change your Hue lighting. You can turn them on, off, dim, and brighten. Instruct Alexa which scenes you want to display or tell google to change the color of individual Philips Hue lights.

Optional Motion Sensors Available. You can program your lights to interact with a wireless motion sensor that you can place ANYWHERE. No wires. No need to touch a switch, phone, or tablet to turn on your lights.

Works With Nest Cam. If some action occurs, like your Nest Cam senses motion, the lights can do whatever you program them to. Can you imagine the look on a burglar’s face when someone breaks into your house and all the lights pop on? You already have the Nest Cam alert on your phone so you speak directly to him through your Nest app, “Smile for the camera, you piece of crap.”

I get goosebumps just thinking about it. Isn’t technology great?

You Probably Already Realize, But Understand This – You are NOT Buying a “Light Bulb”

When you buy Philips Hue light bulbs , realize that you most definitely a NOT paying all this money for a “light bulb.” Hue Lights are smart home devices that integrate into your home and have the capacity to influence every aspect of life in your house.

I’ve already told you about light’s ability to create wicked cool ambiance that will wow your guests and make them feel relaxed and have fun, as well as set the mood for other activities in your house.

But Hue light’s other features just make life easier, more convenient, and safer. Like voice control, app control, timers, alarms, and alerts.

Plus it’s just cool as hell.

For the practical side of you, Hue lights are LED, so Hue lighting actually consumes less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs.

Smart Home Devices Are ALWAYS Improving

This technology is fairly infantile. How many homes have you seen with smart wifi light bulbs, that change when you speak or when someone walks in the room? Not many, right?

Hue lights are in their 3rd generation and already can do so much cool stuff. In addition to the Hue Light A19 starter kit I recommend, Philips offers Hue:

The sky is the limit with this technology. With companies like Nest, IFTTT, and voice control with Alexa all working together, the possibilities for their usefulness down the road are endless.

Philips Hue Light Bulbs Last for 11.416 years, Roughly, But Probably More

How long do Philips Hue light bulbs last? Quite some time. Over a decade, depending on usage.

Philips says these bulbs are made to last for 25,000 hours of use, the same as any LED bulb. So let’s say your lights are on 6 hours a day, every single day. They should work about 4167 days, or 11.416 years.

Philips was established right after the first wheel was invented and is as reputable an organization as they come.

2 Year Warranty and Real, Human, Customer Support

If you ever have any problem with your Hue Bulbs, Call Philips Support at 1-847-717-1890 Monday to Friday 9 am – 6 pm Eastern time (6 am – 3 pm Pacific time). Also, they tweet at: @tweethue.

If you’ve ever lived around Illinois, you may recognize the 847 area code as the Chicago area. I’ve called Hue Support ONE TIME and was speaking to a LIVE, ENGLISH SPEAKING HUMAN immediately. I never had to push a single button or go through an IVR.

Hue Lights have a 2 Year Manufacturer’s warranty. If they fail or flicker in the first 2 years call Philips and they will email you a FedEx label. Send your bulbs in and they will send you new ones. Easy peasy.
